Carlotta Walls LaNair and Carlotta's Special Dress

Carlotta Walls LaNair was one of the “Little Rock Nine,” the first nine Black students to integrate Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Facing angry mobs, threats, and daily harassment, Carlotta and the other eight students showed extraordinary courage as they fought for the right to learn in a previously all‑white, segregated school. Their perseverance—supported by federal intervention—became a defining moment of the Civil Rights Movement and a powerful reminder that young people can help change history.

“Carlotta’s Special Dress” highlights not only what she wore, but what it represented: dignity, determination, and hope in the face of hatred. Through Carlotta’s story and the shared experience of the Little Rock Nine, we honor their bravery and the lasting impact of their stand for equality in education.

I had the greatest joy and honor of working on this very important book. My heart got full many times while creating the images for it. It often took me back to my own childhood experience of being the only child of color in the classroom. I remember how my mom took great care to make sure that I looked good. From that red, blue and green penifore to the crisp white peterpan collard shirt and Buster Brown Mary Janes. I will never ever forget. These students wanted not just to look nice, but to be respected and valued. They had the minds and hearts to learn and it had nothing to do with their skin. They were more than skin! They were children that wanted the same rights as others. Ms. Carlotta and I will be speaking at the Library of Congress in about 3 weeks and I can't wait to share the stage with this wonderful Historial Queen. Wish us well!
